Types of fire extinguishers and where to use them
A fire extinguisher works only on the fire classes it is made for, so the first step is to match the type to the risk in your space.
- ABC fire extinguisher (dry powder): the all-rounder for Class A (wood, paper, cloth), Class B (petrol, oil, paint) and Class C (LPG, CNG) fires. It is the first choice for homes, offices, shops and vehicles.
- CO2 fire extinguisher: leaves no residue, so it is used on electrical panels, server rooms and labs, and on Class B fires.
- Clean agent fire extinguisher: a residue-free gas for rooms with costly electronics, such as data centres and control rooms.
- Foam fire extinguisher: covers burning liquids with a foam blanket, for fuel stores, garages and workshops.
- Water fire extinguisher: for Class A fires of wood, paper and cloth. Do not use it on electrical or oil fires.
- Kitchen (K type) fire extinguisher: made for cooking oil and fat fires in commercial kitchens.
- Modular fire extinguisher: fixed to the ceiling and works automatically, for DB rooms and store rooms with nobody around.
- Trolley fire extinguisher: 25 kg to 75 kg units on wheels for large areas such as godowns, fuel yards and parking.
How to choose the right fire extinguisher size
- 1 kg and 2 kg: cars, small vans, home kitchens and small shops.
- 4 kg: flats, small offices, clinics and retail counters.
- 6 kg: the common size for offices, schools, showrooms and corridors.
- 9 kg: factories, workshops, warehouses and larger floors.
- 25 kg to 75 kg trolley units: big open areas where one portable unit is not enough.
For a full building, the number and placement of extinguishers depend on the floor area and the fire risk. Send us your floor details on WhatsApp and we will suggest a list.
Fire extinguisher price in India
The price of a fire extinguisher depends on the type (ABC, CO2, clean agent and so on), the size, the powder grade (for example MAP 90% or MAP 40% in ABC units), the body material and the brand. Each product on this page shows a starting price as a guide, before GST. The final price comes with your quote and depends on the options and quantity you need. For projects and bulk orders, ask for bulk pricing.
Where to install and how to look after a fire extinguisher
- Mount it on a wall near exits and along escape routes, at a height that is easy to reach, and keep the front clear.
- Check the pressure gauge and the safety pin and seal every month.
- Get it serviced and refilled as the maker recommends, and refill it right after any use, even a short one.
- Train your staff in how to use it. See our fire safety training.
